The Wright Family

Evan won the Vestavia Elementary West Auction donation, and I enjoyed turning my camera on this pretty family. Her spirited 3 year old named Alice, owned me with her red hair, bright blue eyes, dimples and cute pout! She wasn’t in the mood for pictures, but I “get”  and absolutely love a red head (since I have one of my own) so I also got what I wanted and I’m including a lot of them in this post so you can see her fun personality.  And as you will also see, Alice’s brother and sister, Addie and Asher, are just as adorable.

The Schick Kids

I loved getting to photograph these beautiful kids this year. Their mom, Jennifer, and I met years ago at Briarwood Church, and over the years we have worked on our kids’ Bible Clubs together. Such a sweet family…and really photogenic kids with amazingly bright eyes!

The Baker Family

Meet the beautiful Baker family! We met through some dear mutual friends, our kids have been in pre-school together, and we’ve spent weekends at the lake chatting around the pool while our kids splashed away. Alice Bell and I had been talking about a session for a while and finally got a date on the calendar. Then, I get a call a few weeks before we are supposed to shoot and Mary Myers has broken her arm. Without hope of getting her cast off anytime soon, we decide to embrace it as the photographs that will spark a “that was the year when…” story. It was a cute cast too — bright and cheery tie-dye! And, how cute are these girls — Maloy, Mary Myers and Chapel! Dustin and Alice Bell are going to have their hands full when these three get in high school! But, for now, you gotta love them in some pink and orange Hannah Kate!

The Smith Family

I’ve been having fun watching the Smith children grow up over the years and see their little personalities bloom! I first photographed Connor as a baby, then they moved to Dothan and Christi would come back to Birmingham for me to photograph Ella and Coby. Now, I’m glad they’re back in Birmingham again! Such a sweet and beautiful family who is always such a joy to work with.

The Dogan Family

Every fall Allison asks me to photograph her cute boys for the gallery in her home and for Christmas cards. I look forward to catching up with this sweet family and seeing how much Weldon and Hardy have grown in a year. They are so much fun!

The Martin Family

Meet the Martin Family! How cute are these girls?! They were truly some of the happiest children I have ever had the privilege of photographing. Sadie and Sydney were all smiles and laughter the whole time.

The Hurst Family

This was my first time to meet the Hurst family, even though we have so many mutual friends. Stacy won the session I donated to the Vestavia Schools Foundation silent auction. I enjoyed getting to know them during our afternoon at the cabin. Such a cute family!

The Lanier Family

Amy contacted me months in advance to schedule her fall family session at Aldridge Gardens, and somehow we both missed that afternoon was the Native American festival! We drive up to the gardens and the parking lot is so full we have to park down the street. Now, I’ve encountered busy times at both gardens, shooting around proms, weddings and the buzz of other photographers with families on a pretty day. But, this was REALLY busy with people everywhere and there were also little blue strings tied on many of the trees and bushes as part of the festival. Nice! So it was my job to dodge all these people and blue strings while photographing a family of six! I love a good challenge…and very shallow depth of field!

I enjoyed my adventure with the sweet Lanier family! It was a lot of fun and we certainly had some good laughs. In fact, I posted one shot on the proofing gallery of their kids feeding the ducks with another set of random kids who had decided to be in our shot. I told them they could use that one for their Christmas card and shock everyone with their newly adopted children! 🙂 Needless to say I’ll be noting the date if the Native American Festival in my calendar next year! Here’s some highlights from our afternoon together…I don’t think anyone would be able guess what all was going on around us!

Keepin it Real

For those of you who think it’s easy for photographers to photograph their own kids…you are wrong. Our poor children have been test subjects for lighting, posing, locations and other experiments since they were babies! Some days my kids will humor me and other days it’s “No more pictures, Mom!”

Fall is a very busy time for my business, so I try to knock out my own kids’ session for our Christmas cards early. The past two years we have been at the beach in September on vacation; so I’ve chosen to do it then, thinking it will be relaxed and fun. Every year I hope for it to be an easy task, but it usually ends up that everyone is in a hurry to get to dinner when my lighting is just perfect, and this year was no exception. So, I decided we would eat first in hopes that everyone would be happier with full tummies. We ate dinner at George’s in Alys Beach, so I decided we would shoot in Rosemary Beach, just a short drive down the road. Of course, dinner took longer than expected and I was running out of daylight fast, so I had to work quickly and promise lots of treats at the Sugar Shak when we were done.

So you see, I too have to juggle meals, moods, lighting and offer bribes occasionally; so don’t feel alone in your crazy efforts! However, I will say I think it’s much easier to photograph your kids than it is my own! Just keepin it real! Here’s some of the highlights from our session…

I told them to hold hands and dance around, not spin each other at warp speed!

This series makes me laugh because it defines my kids’ personalities. Olivia was doing exactly as she was told, trying to hold Luke’s hand and waiting on him to cooperate. But, Luke decided to break into dance right there in the middle of the street. She just kept waiting patiently with her hand out.

HDP_6448_WEB.jpg

Every year I do a shot looking down on my kids faces right into their eyes. Just want to remember the details (especially the freckles) of their sweet faces from year to year.

HDP_6504_WEB.jpg

The dancing worked a little better here than it did earlier on the lawn.
HDP_6475_WEB.jpg

I wasn’t sure that I had gotten all that I wanted in the short amount of time shooting that evening, so we went back the next afternoon to Watercolor, and of course, there were two weddings going on where I wanted to shoot! I had about 20 minutes left of that beautiful golden light before sunset so I quickly found another spot. The light was changing in each image as you will see. Yes, it was effort, but Mom and I got a few good laughs with the kids in the process.

The Murphree Family

I’ve known the Murphree family for years because we were at Briarwood Church together for a while and went on a couple trip to the mountains together. For years I would admire their baby daughter Belle on the nursery hall because she looked like a china doll. I have wanted to get my camera on this family because they are beautiful inside and out and I finally got my chance this fall. All three children are adorable and sweet! I was smitten!
