Feeling a little Racey… [Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama]

Last weekend I photographed the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park. I can’t tell you how exhilerating it was to be on the race track just a few feet away from Indy cars racing at you at speeds over 150 miles per hour, with only a guardrail between you if they wreck! I don’t have that hazard photographing kids, families and weddings! In fact, some of the other seasoned Indy shooters were giving me advice on what to do if a wreck starts heading my way. Their advice? “Duck, because the car will go flying over you!” Thanks guys! I feel so much better!

It was a fun weekend with perfect weather and record crowds at a beautiful race park known around the world for its excellence. Even my kids got to join in the fun on the track for Opening Ceremonies, with Miss Alabama and Bo Jackson as the Grand Marshal. I have to say that my job is really, really fun!

Bo Jackson was the Grand Marshal for this year’s race. He also is a sponsor of Justin Wilson’s race car for Bo Bikes Bama.

My image on an official Indy race ticket!

Oh the adventures I get to have with my camera! This year I was hired by Bruno Event Team to cover several sporting events in Birmingham — the SEC Baseball Tournament at Regions Park, Regions Tradition golf tournament at Shoal Creek Club, the Triumph Superbike Classic at Barber Motorsports Park, the Vintage Festival at Barber Motorsports Park, the Magic City Classic at Legion Field and the upcoming College Cup Soccer at Regions Park. I’ve had a great time taking on this new photographic adventure!

I found out last week that one of my images would be the feature image on the 2013 Honda Indy Grand Prix official tickets. I was thrilled! It seems surreal for my image to be used to promote this event and these sponsors. I am extremely humbled and grateful to the people at Bruno Event Team who believed in this kids, family and wedding photographer and encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone to turn my camera lens on sports events. I’m having a blast!

Here is the official 2013 Honda Indy Grand Prix ticket featuring my image from last year’s race event. The Indy Grand Prix is a fantastic event at the beautiful and world renown Barber Motorsports Park. Besides watching the races, there are also some fun things for your kids to do — zipline and Ferris wheel rides just to name a few. So, mark your calendar for April 5-7 and bring your kids to watch some race car driving!

Last Sunday was the AMA Triumph Superbike Classic at the amazingly beautiful Barber Motorsports Park. It was my first racing event to shoot for Bruno Event Team. It was thrilling to see the motorcycles zoom by, hear their loud engines rev and watch them leaning so far on turns that their knees dragged the ground. These drivers have no fear! Here are some of my favorite shots from the day…
