Regions Tradition PGA Champions TOUR, Sunday Final Round

I enjoyed shooting the PGA Champions TOUR Regions Tradition Sunday Final Round again this year. I love shooting for Children’s of Alabama and that this amazing hospital right here in Birmingham, is the primary beneficiary of charitable contributions generated by the Regions Tradition. Jeff Maggert, 2015 Champion, took home the trophy after a sudden death playoff. Here are some of my favorite shots of the day…

Photographer for the PGA Champions TOUR, Regions Tradition

It was a privilege to once again shoot for the PGA TOUR at the 2014 Regions Tradition / Charles Schwabb Cup tournament at Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama. Everyone involved, from the TOUR and Bruno Event Team to the Chairs and Members of Shoal Creek, is so hospitable and makes it such a pleasure to work at a major golf event.

The week of coverage consisted of the Pairings Party, Barefoot on the Green Party, Celebrity Pro-Am, Preakness Viewing Party and Tournament rounds. Some of the celebrities participating in the Pro-Am were Holly Sonders, Nick Saban, Bo Jackson and Charles Barkley. I’m so proud of Birmingham for hosting a major golf event year after year that I’ve been going to since I was in college. It’s a fantastic community event.

Here are a few of my favorite images. A big thanks to my friend Emily Kicklighter for helping me with coverage this year. I love that we were able to get the 18th hole of the final round from the grandstand and the ground.

Congratulations to 2014 Regions Tradition Champion, Kenny Perry, who won by one stroke.

When asked about the fashion choice, Perry said it was a conscientious one. ‘ lost my mom to multiple myeloma cancer and I lost my sister to breast cancer. I know Christy Kite has had two rounds with cancer and now she’s got a third bout going,” he said.
“It’s just for the gals. I’ve lost a lot of ladies and I like pink.'” (Source: al.com)

Birmingham Barons

Take us out to the ballgame! Last Friday night, our entire family went to a Birmingham Barons game…kids, aunts, uncles, cousins and our 92 year old grandparents! It was my family’s first time in the new stadium and I love the location! It’s surrounded by Birmingham landmarks…adjacent to Railroad Park, with a view of Children’s Hospital and UAB. All Birmingham landmarks. The highlights of the night for the kids were stadium dogs, ice cream and fireworks! And, wouldn’t you know they were on the Jumbotron dancing while I was in line getting food? Ugh! So sad I missed that shot! And, I didn’t know there was going to be fireworks, so next time I’ll be bringing my tripod!

It was a beautiful summer night watching America’s favorite pastime. If you haven’t been yet, I highly recommend it! We had the best time!

Regions Tradition Golf Tournament, Sunday Final Round Highlights [Shoal Creek Golf Club]

Sunday was the final round of the Regions Tradition PGA Champions Tour golf tournament at Shoal Creek, and it was a tricky one to shoot. Scattered thunderstorms loomed over us throughout the day, with play being delayed several times. It was muggy and wet, and my protective rain covers kept going on and off my equipment. Twice I found myself sprinting for cover with all my gear when the bottom broke out all of a sudden. However, looking on the bright side…I was thankful that one of the storms hit right at lunch time!

Although the weather was not all sunshine and blue skies, our community came out in a big way to support the tournament. David Frost from South Africa took the win, one stroke under Fred Couples. Here are some highlights from the final round.

My brother sacrificed a day with his family to join me out on the course. He loves the game of golf and is very good at it. I mean, really good! He was a huge help to me, checking weather radar, keeping me up to date on the leader board and navigating around the course. Plus, I can’t remember the last time we spent 12 hours straight together! What a fun day! Here’s a photo of us (waterlogged) with the champion.

Regions Tradition Golf Tournament, Saturday Highlights [Shoal Creek Golf Club]

Last weekend was the Regions Tradition PGA Champions Tour at Shoal Creek Golf Club and I had the great privilege and pleasure of being hired to cover it again this year. In addition to the fun of shooting a golf major, I was able to walk the course for two days with the PGA Tour’s senior staff photographer, Chris Condon. And oh, he wouldn’t want me to write about him in this blog because he’s very humble, but his images are amazing. He has shot golf’s greatest players for the PGA for over 15 years and he was kind enough to offer me lots of insight into shooting professional golf. I’m grateful to him for that.

Here are some highlights from Saturday’s round.

Regions Tradition Celebrity Pro Am [Shoal Creek Golf Club]

Yesterday I had the best time photographing the Celebrity Pro-Am, as part of the Regions Tradition PGA Champions Tour, benefitting Children’s Hospital of Alabama. It was a privilege to walk the beautiful course at Shoal Creek with Bo Jackson, recently named ESPN’s greatest athlete of all time. I believe it. Even the pros were amazed at his skills on the golf course. And, the brains of the group was Dr. Condoleezza Rice, former Secretary of State for the Bush Administration. The comic relief was brought to the game by Bubba of the Rick & Bubba Show, while Paul Finebaum was there to set everyone straight on stats. Gus Malzhan, Steve Spurrier and Wimp Sanderson were also among the players. Unfortunately, Nick Saban never got to tee off due to the afternoon rain storm that cancelled play; but he did get to hit a few balls on the driving range, engage the press and sign some autographs. I’ll let the images tell the rest of the story of my day on the golf course…

2013 Regions Tradition Pro-Am Pairings Party [Shoal Creek Golf Club]

I am thrilled to be photographing the Regions Tradition PGA Champions Tour golf tournament at the prestigious Shoal Creek Golf Club again this year. I love that this entire tournament event benefits Children’s Hospital of Alabama. In addition to tournament play, this year I will be photographing the Celebrity Pro-Am on Wednesday. Bo Jackson, Condoleezza Rice, Nick Saban, Paul Finebaum, Gus Malzahn, Wimp Sanderson and Bubba (from the Rick & Bubba Show) are just some of the celebrities I will be following, along with the Pros with whom they are paired, such as Tom Lehman the defending Champion, Fred Couples, Hale Irwin and more. It should be a really fun day of shooting on the course.

The Pairings Party is when the local amateurs find out which pros and celebrities they are paired with, and it was held Tuesday evening on the lawn in front of Shoal Creek clubhouse. The color palette? Regions green and white, of course. It was a beautiful event with a great show of support for the Regions Tradition and Children’s of Alabama.

Feeling a little Racey… [Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama]

Last weekend I photographed the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park. I can’t tell you how exhilerating it was to be on the race track just a few feet away from Indy cars racing at you at speeds over 150 miles per hour, with only a guardrail between you if they wreck! I don’t have that hazard photographing kids, families and weddings! In fact, some of the other seasoned Indy shooters were giving me advice on what to do if a wreck starts heading my way. Their advice? “Duck, because the car will go flying over you!” Thanks guys! I feel so much better!

It was a fun weekend with perfect weather and record crowds at a beautiful race park known around the world for its excellence. Even my kids got to join in the fun on the track for Opening Ceremonies, with Miss Alabama and Bo Jackson as the Grand Marshal. I have to say that my job is really, really fun!

Go Braves!

I had the best experience today photographing a visit by the Atlanta Braves to Children’s Hospital. I loved watching the kids’ eyes light up as they got to play baseball on the Wii and playstation with some of the players. Now that’s what it’s all about right there…Big hearts for little kids! I love my job!
