Several months ago I had the opportunity to photograph a day in the life of Chris Janson and family at their farm here in Franklin, TN, then later that evening backstage before his performances at the Grand Ole Opry. Kelly and Chris Janson were kind and gracious hosts as we spent all day on their land, in their home and in their dressing room at the Opry getting a peek inside their life as country music artist and manager juggling celebrity life with real life.
Watching Chris and his son Jesse fish together reminded me of something my husband has always told me about his time hunting with our son…”The outdoor lifestyle is never just about the activity. So many real and meaningful conversations about life happen around a pond, in a field and in the woods.” It was clear that his outdoor experiences greatly influence and feed his creativity as an artist. It was a pleasure to see more of his story through my lens.
Don’t miss the behind the scenes video of our shoot on the Janson farm at the end of this post. Such Good Vibes and a fun day on the job! Thanks to the fine folks at Covey Rise for the assignment. It’s a privilege to have my images in such a beautiful publication.
Here’s a Behind The Scenes video from our cover story shoot at the Janson family farm in Franklin, TN.
Breanne and I met years ago in Birmingham. She was a pilates participant in my classes there and also babysat my kids while she was in pharmacy school. So, when she contacted me to photograph her newborn baby boy at their home in Chattanooga, of course it was an absolute “yes”! Plus, who doesn’t love a road trip to charming Chattanooga? Here’s some of my favorite images from our morning together at their home perched on Lookout Mountain.
I absolutely LOVED getting even more time with this sweet couple! Morgan chose a bridal session in her Collection, but preferred to wait until after the wedding…and brought her new hubby Cooper along for the fun so they could have a few more portraits together in different locations around Birmingham. So, about one month after their wedding day we met at the historic Elyton Hotel downtown for bridal portraits on the 100 year old marble staircase and couple portraits in the beautiful ocean blue living room. Later, we made our way to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens for golden hour. It was perfect.
It’s that time of year again when I get back to the roots of where my business started over 16 years ago with kids and family portraits. Over the years my business has grown into weddings, commercial and editorial work, and I’m not able to photograph kids and families consistently throughout the year as much as I used to, so I get excited every fall to reconnect with loyal family clients and meet new ones! Each year in the fall season, Heather Durham Photography offers Portrait Mini Sessionsin Nashville, TN andBirmingham, AL which include the following:
25 Minutes Shooting on Location Up to 5 Immediate Family Members Online gallery for 2 weeks to share with family and friends 5 Digital Images Print Release up to size 8×10 Holiday Cards exclusively through Minted and Dixie Design.
FRANKLIN, TN DATES: September 28,29 BIRMINGHAM, AL DATES: October 4,6
Exact locations to be determined and could include greater Nashville and greater Birmingham areas. And, don’t worry! If I select the same location as you have used on a previous year, I always change up the look and spots within each location to make them look different. Exact locations will be announced the week of your shoot and directions sent via email.
Fall Minis are the only time the Minimum Print Order is waived and 5 Digital Files are included, so it’s a great value and a great way to update your images, purchase gift prints, design Christmas cards and update your profile pictures. Even though digitals are included, you all know how important it is to me for my clients to receive actual prints in hand, so online ordering is also available through the gallery and prints are shipped directly to your home.
I can’t wait to see you! And feel free to bring the furry members of your family too! I love it when pets are included in your photographs!
Session Fee: $375 Each additional subject over 5 add $25
Last month I invested in me. I invested in my business. I surrounded myself with hundreds of incredibly talented photographers from all over the world. I met with owners of film labs to learn more about their processes and how I can deliver the best images to my clients. I met with print labs to discuss new partnerships for the fine art prints I have always offered my clients, since the beginning of my business over 16 years ago.
It’s always important to me to attend at least one industry conference each year. Continuing education is invaluable. I never want to feel like I’ve learned everything there is to know. I want to always be a student, honing my skills. Conferences are always a shot in the arm of inspiration, but sometimes they can also make you feel “less than” or overwhelmed with information and how to apply it to your business right away. As soon as those feelings creep in I try to realign them with the truth that I am enough. My worth is in Christ and I am created to be me, not anyone else. I do me. I stay true to my style, my goals and my desire to keep learning and pursuing the best ways to serve my amazing clients. Then I stop for a minute, take a deep breath and realize how deeply grateful I am that THIS is what I get to do every single day. It brings me so much joy.
I already shared the shoot hosted by the talented Eric Kelley and you can see that post here. Now, I want to share some of the film images from an inspiration shoot and workshop hosted by another leader in the wedding photography industry, Lauren Fair, who has been named Top Wedding Photographer in the world by BRIDES and The Knot. I enjoyed meeting her after following her work for a while now. She and her husband Tim are kind people and wonderfully humble educators. I love how this shoot turned out because of the efforts of an incredibly talented vendor team. My business started with film exclusively over 16 years ago. After a long sabbatical, it feels good to slowly weave film back into my workflow as a hybrid shooter, which just means that I’m an artist who chooses the medium (film or digital) that best suits the client, the situation and the light. I hope you enjoy this lovely wedding inspiration shot on film…
